Dennis A. Rusin, 68, Westport

Rusin 001Dennis A. Rusin, 68, of Westport, died Thursday, Aug. 27, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness.

Born in Fall River, son of the late Joseph F. Rusin, Sr. and the late Laura M. (Belisle) Rusin, he was a lifelong resident of Westport.  He was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport.

Mr. Rusin had previously worked as a mechanic and as a security guard and was an avid gardener.  Dennis actively donated bait for the annual Boy Scout Fishing Tournament held at LePage’s.  He was a devoted father who enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise A. Rusin of Fall River and Laurie Ann DeCosta of Coventry, Vt.; two brothers, Joseph F. Rusin Jr. of Dartmouth and Richard L. Rusin of West Topsham, Vt.; a sister, Laurie M. Johnson of Massachusetts; three grandchildren; his former wife, Georgia A. (Strickland) Rusin of Lakeville; and several nieces and nephews.

Private arrangements under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport,will be held at the convenience of the family.

Frank Sousa, 50, Bristol

Sousa, Frank

Frank Sousa, 50, of Charlotte Drive, Bristol, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 27. He was the loving husband of Ursula S. (Tietz) Sousa.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Antonio and Dorothy (Roderick) Sousa; father of James Sousa; stepfather of Megan Bergeron, Stephanie Palumbo and Douglas Bergeron; grandfather of Jazilyn Sousa, Julia Sousa, Ariana Niles, Ethan Niles and Zoe Palumbo, and brother of Peter Sousa.

Frank was a 1982 graduate of Bristol High School and after graduating worked as a carpenter for 10 years.  He became a member of the Defiance Hose Company No. 1 in November of 1992, served as an orderly from 1995 to 1998 and then First Lieutenant from 1999 to 2001.  He became Captain in 2002, serving in that position from 2002 to 2005 and from 2011 to 2013. He was an Assistant Chief for the Bristol Fire Department in 2006, 2007 and 2014 and served as a Deputy Chief in 2008 and 2015. Frank was also a member of the Bristol Rescue Squad from 1993 to 2000 and was the “Clamboil Master.”

He was a member of the Bristol Fire Police and Firemen’s Memorial & Welfare Committee and the Rhode Island State Firemen’s League, serving as an alternate from 2005 to 2010 and a delegate beginning in 2011.

His funeral services were held Sept. 1 from the George Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial concelebrated by the Rev. Barry J. Gamache, Rev. Richard A. Narciso and Rev. Henry P. Zinno Jr. at St. Mary’s Church. Liturgical readings were by Diane Costa and Diane Davis. The offertory gifts were presented by James Morris and Mike Iervolino.

Burial followed in North Burial Ground. Serving as pallbearers were James Sousa, Adam Cabral, Daniel Chetham, David Benevides, Douglas Bergeron, John Coccio, Tim Foley and David Coccio. Honorary pallbearers were Octavio Vieira, David Sylveira, Matt White, Joe DaRosa, William VanVoast, Matt Toms, Ryan Coccio, George Seyez III, Benton Smith, Nelson Luis, Tony Sousa, Robert Ferguson, Raymond Castro, Telly Gatos, Gary Geoffroy, Adam Medeiros and James Morris, as well as members of the Bristol Fire Department and Bristol Police Department.

Louise Medeiros, 99, Portsmouth

medeirosLouise Medeiros, 99, of Portsmouth, died on Wednesday, Sept. 02, 2015, at the Crestwood Nursing Home, Warren. She was the wife of the late Manuel P. Medeiros.

Born on May 30, 1916, in Tiverton, she was the daughter of Manuel Almas Medeiros and Gloria Medeiros.

She grew up in Tiverton and later moved to Portsmouth.  She worked for many years as a seamstress in Fall River and enjoyed cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Edward Medeiros and his wife Joanne,  Anita Cabral and her husband Joseph, and Joan Ouellette and her husband Donald, all of Portsmouth, and Elaine Tierney of Warren. She is also survived by her sister Bella Teixeira of Fall River, eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her siblings, John Medeiros, Joseph Almas, Manuel Almas, Antone Medeiros, Frank Medeiros, and Mary Corey Cabral.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, Sept. 4 from 4-7 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 5, at 9 a.m. from the funeral home, followed by A Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Anthony’s Church, East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will follow at Newport Memorial Park.

Beatrice Rawcliffe Sanford, 84, Tiverton

Beatrice Rawcliffe Sanford, 84, passed away July 6, surrounded by her family. She was the the wife of Quentin A. Sanford. They marked their 59th wedding anniversary on June 30.

She was the owner of Pachet Brook Park in Tiverton and Handy Hill Creamery in Westport, and former owner of Heritage Park in Tiverton and Star Diner in Rumford, RI.

Born in Central Falls to the late James and Beatrice (Hartley) Rawcliffe, she moved with her family to Lincoln, RI in 1937.

She was a 1948 graduate of Central Falls High School. During high school, she was employed at Lincoln Woods Farm Creamery as an ice cream scooper. Following graduation, she was employed at Gorman’s Bakery in Central Falls as the assistant to the office manager.

She was a long-time member of Holy Trinity Church in Tiverton where she served as a Sunday School teacher, Vestry member and on the Altar Guild. She was in charge of the altar flowers for close to 20 years until illness forced her to retire.

Besides her husband she is survived by her daughter, Bethany Smith and her husband Douglas of Westport, and her son Quentin Jr. of Tiverton.

She also leaves her sisters-in-law, Mrs. Frank (Sandra) Rawcliffe of Smithfield, Mrs. Roger (Doris) Sanford of Westport and Mrs. George (Jocelyn) Sanford of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Jay L. Churchill of Tiverton, and many nieces, nephews, dear friends the Caron Family and her cats Dusty Paiva and Tux.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Charles E. Rawcliffe, Frank Rawcliffe, James Horace Rawcliffe and James Rawcliffe.

At her request, visitation was omitted. A memorial service will be held September 16 at 10 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 1956 Main Road, Tiverton. Burial to follow at Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Parkinson’s Foundation. A special way to remember Beatrice would be to bring flowers to a shut-in.

The name Beatrice means “She who Blesses” and she was the embodiment of her name. We were all blessed to have had her in our lives.

Thomas J. Nunes, 56, Kingston, R.I.

Thomas J. Nunes, 56, of Kingston, R.I., died Saturday, Aug. 29, 2015. Tom was the son of the late Alfred N. Nunes and Mary L. (McCaffrey) Nunes.
He is survived by his brother, Peter Nunes, sister-in-law, Mary (Keane) Nunes, both of Peace Dale, and their children, Charlotte, Christian and Timothy, and his step-mother, Shirley Nunes of Bristol.
Tom was for many years a resident of facilities run by the State of Rhode Island, most recently at University Fields Apartments, and his family is profoundly thankful for the fine care he received over the years.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at noon on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol, followed by interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Joy Wolff, 89, formerly of Little Compton

JoyWolffPhoto 2[3]Joy Wolff, 89, died peacefully September 1, 2015, in her home at Laurelmead in Providence.  Previously a resident of Little Compton, she had moved to Providence in 2010.  Aptly named, she brought great joy to all who knew her.  Upbeat, spirited, and always sporting that infectious smile, she will be greatly missed.

Joy Petersmeyer was born in Los Angeles and lived in and around San Francisco with her husband of 55 years, insurance executive George Wolff Jr., who predeceased her in 2001.

Joy was an avid tennis enthusiast, accomplished gardener, and talented seamstress, but her life-long passion was music.  She was a member of the choir at the United Congregational Church in Little Compton, the Greater Tiverton Community Chorus, and the choir of the Central Congregational Church in Providence.  At the time of her death she was a member of the Handicraft Club and the Hope Club, both in Providence.

Survivors include her daughter, Anne Wolff Page of Tiverton; a son, H. Ward Wolff of Greenbrae,, Calif., five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at 11 a.m., at the Central Congregational Church in Providence.  The family requests that any memorial contributions be directed to WaterFire Providence, 101 Regent Avenue #12, Providence, RI 02909.

Agatha M. Marion, 87, Little Compton

Agatha M. (Gomez) Marion, 87, of Little Compton, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Antone Marion Jr. to whom she was married for 60 years.

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late John Gomez Sr. and Helen Mae (Brown) Gomez, she had been a lifelong resident of Little Compton.

She was a graduate of Josephine F. Wilbur School in Little Compton and went on to the Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse. She then returned to the Wilbur School where, for many years prior to her retirement, she was employed as the school nurse. Mrs. Marion was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include her son, Antone “Buzzy” Marion III and his wife Karen of Little Compton; her two daughters, Beth A. Marion and her husband Paul White of Kingston, RI, and Amy B. Marion and her husband Christopher Woods of Greenland, NH; two brothers, John Gomez Jr. of Hingham, Mass., and Donald T. Gomez of Little Compton; one sister, Suzanne Eolin of Adamsville; three grandchildren, Anna Kidd, Andrew Marion and Jacob Marion; one great grandchild, Logan Kidd; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Catherine A. Roach, 95, Tiverton

Catherine Roach 001Catherine A. Roach, 95, born in Fall River and formerly of Tiverton, passed away peacefully at Catholic Memorial Home on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015.

She was the widow of Francis D. Roach and mother of late infant son Francis.

Surviveors are four daughters, Beverly K. Roach, Mary C. Roach, Paula A Vital (husband Gary), all of Tiverton, and Patricia A. Livernois (husband Leonard) of Exeter. She leaves a brother, Stanley Janczura (wife Mary) of Assonet.

Predeceased are six of her siblings, Joseph, John, Stephen and Eugene Janczura, Mary Babka, and Aniela Landoch.

The loves of her life were her six grandchildren, Byron (wife Mary) Livernois, Nathan Livernois,Alison, Andrew (wife Meg), Nicholas Vital and the late Timothy Livernois; her cherished great granddaughter, Josephine Livernois and her newest great grandchild Liam Vital. Also she leaves several nieces and nephews.

Before her illness, she was an active member of St Stan’s Seniors ( the pierogi ladies), enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cooking and was an excellent seamstress.

We would like to commend the wonderful staff at Catholic Memorial Home for their care and concern for our mother.

Lt. Col. Joseph J. Sagan, 98, Warren

Lt. Col. Joseph J. Sagan, 98, a lifelong Warren resident, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015. He was a son of the late Martin and Katherine (Piecuch) Sagan and husband of the late Florence M. (Bouffard) Sagan.
Mr. Sagan was a 1935 Warren High School graduate, where he lettered in baseball, football and basketball. He entered the Army Corps of Engineers in 1940. During World War II he received a commendation during the 1942 sinking of the troop transport President Coolidge, and participated in the Solomon Campaign. He was chosen as one of only two selections from the combat area to attend Engineer Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir, VA., from which he graduated and was commissioned on July 21, 1943.
He trained with the First Airborne Engineer Unit at Westover Field, MA, the 879th Engineer Airborne Base and Glider Training with the 879th Airborne Bn. at Laurinburg Maxton Air Base, NC. In 1943 he went to North Africa to make preparations at the staging area in Oran and Algiers for the Sicilian Invasion. After a change in orders he was sent to the China, Burma and India Theater. In January 1944, he participated in glider operations behind Japanese lines, constructing airstrips for the purpose of landing British General Wingate’s Phantom Raiders and the units of the famed Merrill’s Marauders. The Unit received Presidential citation.
Mr. Sagan returned to the United States in 1945 and was assigned as instructor of Engineer troops at MacDill and Drew Field Air Bases in Florida. After separation he joined the Officers’ Reserve Corps and became a Charter member of the Bristol Chapter, Reserve Officers Association. He joined the 118th Engineer Bn. 43rd Infantry Division and in 1946 he was Platoon Leader with “A” Co. of Pawtucket and later with Headquarters Co. in Providence. In 1949 he was given orders to activate a new company of engineers in the Town of Warren and was then recalled for service during the Korean War in 1950. He served many posts until 1962.
Mr. Saga took University of Rhode Island extension courses and completed his Civil Engineering Certificate at the US Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, VA. After his military career, he was employed by the Rhode Island Dept. of Public Works, was a member of the National Guard Association (US and RI), the Warren Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He also served on the Town of Warren Planning Board.
Mr. Sagan leaves his daughter, Maureen Deese and her husband Jimmy; his grandchildren, Louis J. Sousa and Jimmy R. Deese; and his great-grandchildren, Bryan Leffingwell and his wife Melissa and Shana Giarrusso and her husband Steve. He was the grandfather of the late Laurie A. Cordeiro and Brian Deese and brother of the late Sophie Spieczny.
Visiting hours are 8:30 a.m. to 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Wilbur Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, RI, with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. in St. Jean the Baptiste Church, 324 Main St., Warren. Burial will follow in St. Jean the Baptiste Cemetery, Vernon Street.

Marilyn Alice Lasker, 75, Bristol

Lasker, MarilynMarilyn Alice (Wallace) Lasker, 75, of Bristol passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015. She was the wife of the late Honorable Arthur E. Lasker. Born in Queens, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Roger and Marion Wallace.

She is survived by her daughter, Meredith Astrologo, and her husband Val of Bristol, grandchildren Madison and Marissa Astrologo of Bristol, brother Bruce Wallace and his wife, Maureen, of Marlboro, N.J., and niece Alison Wallace of Cranford, N.J.

Marilyn was a graduate of Richmond Hill High School in Queens, N.Y., and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College. Among the highlights of Marilyn’s extensive career, she was a fashion model, boutique owner and self-employed fashion designer and manufacturer.  Her passions included traveling and cooking. Marilyn lived the most of her life in New Your City before retiring to Bristol to be near her family.

Funeral services for Marilyn will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, with a Gathering for the Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. at The First Congregational Church, 300 High St., Bristol. Calling hours are respectfully omitted.

Edward J. Goulart Jr., 48, North Providence

Edward J. Goulart Jr. died on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, at the age of 48.

Ed was the son of Edward Goulart and the late Sandra Mercurio Travers and brother of Sheri Stuart. He grew up in Bristol and later moved to North Providence. He graduated from Rhode Island College with a degree in graphic design. After a career in retail sales management, Ed brought his talents to Jimmy Stuart’s.

Anyone who met Ed loved Ed. He was the kindest, most generous person, who had a special way of making people laugh and feel good about themselves.

A memorial is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol. All are welcome to attend and are encouraged to speak about Ed. The family will hold a reception to follow to celebrate Ed’s life at 6 Jacobs Point in Warren. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the ASPCA.

Rosemary Bowen, 77, Little Compton

RosemaryBowen_BW (2)Rosemary (Moore) Bowen, 77, of Little Compton, died Sunday, Sept. 6 at home surrounded by her family. The wife of E. Howland “Ted” Bowen, mother of five, grandmother of 12, she dedicated her life to her family and was proud of each and the love they had for each other. She resided in Little Compton since her marriage 48 years ago.

She was born May 26, 1938, in New Bedford to Rose (McCabe) and Patrick Moore, both of Ireland.  A graduate of Holy Family High School and Bridgewater State College, where she further attained a master’s degree, she was the first lay woman to teach and coach at Bishop Stang High School. Since 1978 she had been the owner and principal broker of Spinnaker Real Estators in Little Compton. She was a Lady Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

She is survived by her husband and five children, Edward (Ivy), Patrick (Claire), Sean (Shelley) and Margaret Manning (Geoffrey), all of Little Compton, and Daniel (Christina) of Kensington, Md. She also leaves three siblings, Monsignor John F. Moore of Cotuit, Mass., Margaret Grandchamp, of Adams, Mass., and Kevin Moore of Narberth, Penn. Rosemary dearly loved her grandchildren, Alisdair, Myles, Aidan, Malcolm, Elizabeth, Sam, Stella, Margaret and Michela Bowen; and Lois, Edward, and Rose Manning.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church followed by burial in Our Lady of Fatima cemetery. Calling hours are Friday, Sept. 11, from 5-8 at Fern Acres Funeral Home, 72 Willow Avenue, Little Compton. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Catherine of Siena Church or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Lucinda Peckham, 77, Little Compton

obit-peckham 9:10Lucinda (Wilcox) Peckham, “Polly,” 77, died September 6, 2015, unexpectedly, surrounded by her family.  She was the wife of the late Robert A. Peckham, former harbormaster at Sakonnet Point.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Carl M. and Ursilla (Almy) Wilcox, she spent her youth in Tiverton before moving to Little Compton.  She was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1956, and URI, Class of 1960 where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority.  Lucinda spent her entire career working for the US Postal Service in Tiverton.

Lucinda was an avid reader who was passionate about her animals.  She enjoyed genealogy and was a member of the Genealogical Society as well as the National Audubon Society. Lucinda often assisted her husband at Sakonnet Point on the long time family owned vessel: Nasuluga which has previously been owned by Lucinda’s father and grandfather.

Surviving is an aunt and numerous cousins.

Her memorial service will be Friday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m. in Amicable Congregational Church, 3804 Main Rd. Tiverton.  Her family will greet friends in the church from 12:30-1 p.m. prior to her service.  Burial will be  private.

Wilfred J. Thibault, 80, Westport

obit-thibaultWilfred J. Thibault, 80, of Westport, died Monday, Sept. 7, 2015, at Charlton Memorial Hospital.  He was the husband of the late Helen (Fontaine) Thibault and the late Yvonne (Mello) Thibault.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Wilfred J.B. and Azilda (Banville) Thibault.

Mr. Thibault served his country in the United States Army.  He was a past commander of the VFW Ouellette Post 8502, Westport.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra Thibault of Providence, RI; two grandchildren, Alex K. Thibault and Aimee N. Thibault; and many nieces and nephews.  He was the father of the late Kenneth Thibault.

Avis Geneva Kotoski, age 92, of White Bear Lake, Minn., formerly of East Providence, passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 5, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandma and great-grandma.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of over 70 years of marriage,
Edward Joseph; five children; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Ida Ballou; sister, Gladys Brightman; and brothers, Arthur, Ira and Roy Ballou.

Visitation was Thursday, July 9, 2015, at Mueller Memorial, 4738 Bald
Eagle Ave., White Bear Lake, Minn. A Mass of Christian Burial was Friday, July 10, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3878 Highland Ave., White Bear Lake, Minn. Interment was at Rutherford Cemetery in Stillwater, Minn.

Shirley M. Grimshaw, 65, Albion, R.I.

Shirley M. (Mello) Grimshaw, 65, of School Street, P.O. Box 186, Albion, R.I. 02802, died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2015, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. She was the beloved wife of A. W. Grimshaw III for 46 years.

Born in Bristol, a daughter of Shirley (Flynn) Mello of Bristol, and the late Edward Mello, she had lived in Seekonk for 35 years, before moving to Lincoln in 2014. With her husband, she had summered in Northport, Maine, for many years, where she enjoyed walking the beach in search of heart rocks, fossils and sea glass.

Mrs. Grimshaw worked as a computer programmer in the Information Sciences Division of Fleet Bank and Bank of America before becoming ill, of which she had struggled with for 37 years. She dedicated her life to her husband, two children, and six precious grandchildren. This included 2 1/2 years assisting her husband in setting up a plant in Germany.

She was a member of the Lupus Foundation, serving on the Board of Directors. She loved researching her family’s history and genealogy, which led her to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and a member of the New England Genealogical Society.

She was a longtime member of the Barrington Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was an avid reader, collector of rare books and an expert of early American history.

Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Heather Grimshaw-Howard of Lincoln; one son, Scott W. Grimshaw of Foster; five grandchildren, Benjamin Howard, Abigail Howard, Samuel Howard, Jacob Howard, and Xiaolu Grimshaw; two sisters, Sara Mello-Sooknah and Jayne Mello; five brothers, James Mello, Edward “Ted” Mello, Joseph Mello, Thomas Mello, and Kevin Mello; and several nieces and nephews.  She was the grandmother of the late Jonathan Grimshaw.

A Service of Remembrance & Thanksgiving will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 12, at 2:30 p.m. at the home of her daughter, 1730 Old Louisquisset Pike, Lincoln. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

Private burial will take place in the family lot at North Burial Ground, Bristol. obit-Sarah MartinMrs. Sarah (Martin) Martin, age 89, of 160 Franklin St., Bristol, died peacefully Sunday, Sept. 6, at her home. Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Mariano and Mary (Bettencourt) Martin.

Sarah worked for American Tourister Company, formerly in Warren, for over 20 years, retiring in 1976. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality at the church.

Sarah is survived by two children, Joseph K. Martin (Corrine) and Elaine Roderick, both of Bristol; three grandchildren, Jamie Roderick (Kristy), Jeremy Roderick (Tiffany) and Lindsey Mello (Steven); four great-grandchildren, Marissa Londyn, Bryce, and Bailey Roderick; and a brother, Joseph Martin of Middletown. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents, by two sisters, Mary “Bubbles” Benevides and Helen Castro, and a brother, Mariano Martin.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 11 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will be private, and visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Maria Lourdes Aguiar, 93, Bristol

obit-Aguiar, Maria, photosMaria Lourdes Aguiar, 93, of Roosevelt Drive, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at home. She was the loving and devoted wife of 59 years to Manuel Aguiar and mother of Maria M. Aguiar.

Born in Fazenda, Flores, Azores, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria Pinheiro. She was the sister of Luis Silva of Terceira. She was the sister of the late Jose Pinheiro, Antonio Pinheiro, Daniel Pinheiro, Eva Camara and Adao Silva.

She attended school in Portugal. She was a store clerk in Lajes, Flores, before coming to this country and then worked for Bristol Knitting Mills in Fall River and then Carol Cable of Warren before retiring.

She was a member of the Legion of Mary of St. Elizabeth Church. She was known for her gentle spirit, generous nature and deep faith in the Lord. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, tending her flower garden and reading.

Her funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 11, at 10 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol. Calling hours are Thursday 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Friends of St Elizabeth Food Pantry, 577 Wood St., Bristol, RI 02809.

Brian E. Segerson, 70, Tiverton

segersonBrian Edward Segerson, 70, of Tiverton, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center of Newport.

Born on January 7, 1945 in Newport, he was the son of the late Albert Segerson and Helen (Carreiro) Segerson McPhee and stepson of the late Arthur Joseph “Mac” McPhee.

Brian lived in Newport most of his life, formerly on Gould Street and West Street.  He was an avid HAM radio operator, and was known by the handle “Little Sheriff.”  He loved old time country music, especially Hank Williams and Johnny Cash.  Recently he also enjoyed several trips to Foxwoods.  He will be missed by his friends at the Rocky Knoll group home and Heatherwood Nursing Home.

He is survived by his brother, Michael McPhee of Los Angeles, Calif., and his sister, Bonnie Lancaster of Greenville, NC; his aunts and uncle, Ernie and Esther McPhee of Rumford, Maine, and Anna Carreiro of Newport; and nephews Jason Ainsley of Statesville, NC, Ryan Ainsley of Raleigh, NC and Kevin Ainsley of Greenville, NC.

Calling hours will be Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9:30-11 a.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, followed by a funeral service at 11 in the funeral home. Burial will follow in Newport Memorial Park.

Sue J. Salcone, 92, Bristol

Sue Salcone colorMrs. Sue J. (Castigliego) Salcone, age 92, of Roma Street, Bristol, died peacefully Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015, at the Silver Creek Manor surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of Matthew J. Salcone, her husband of almost 70 years.

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was a daughter of the late Matteo and Luigina (Murgo) Castigliego. Sue was a dress maker for the former Priscilla Sportswear Company in Bristol for 25 years and the former Well Made Dress Company in Warren for a few years, retiring in 1986.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Bristol, where she was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society, the Nocturnal Adoration Society, Feast and Bazaar worker for many years, and the former Mother’s Club at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.  In 1998 she and her husband Matthew received the highest honor of the parish. They were named Chief Marshals of the 16th of July Feast in honor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

Sue was also a member of the Hope Circle, Daughters of Isabella, a volunteer for the Columban Fathers summer festival, a member of the former House of Judah Prayer Group for many years, a member of the Leonardo daVinci Lodge, Sons of Italy, and the Bristol Senior Citizens Council.

Sue will be remembered as a marvelous cook and baker, well known for her eggplant and pasta dishes and Italian cookies.

She is survived, in addition to her husband, by three children, Therese M. Pasqual (Manuel), Victoria A. Cortellessa (John P. Jr.) and Peter M. Salcone, all of Bristol; six grandchildren, Susan Pasqual (Neil Thompson), John Paul Cortellessa III, Matthew Salcone, Valerie McCue (David), Michael Salcone and Jennifer Carvalho (Filipe); three great-grandchildren, Elijah Carvalho, Chloe McCue and Sienna Carvalho; a sister, Marie Pirri; and two brothers, Gaetano and Dominic Castigliego, all of Bristol.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Salvaggi and Lucy DelPiano, and five brothers, Nicholas, Paul, Cosmo, Damiano Castigliego and Matteo Castigliego Jr. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, Monday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.
