Stuart T Douglas Sr obituary photoStuart T. Douglas, 93, of Houston, Texas, and Little Compton, died on May 24, 2014, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Dorothy Douglas.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1920, the son of the late Walter Cooley Douglas and Dorothy (Topping) Douglas Bomeisler, his formative years were spent in New York City and Greenwich, Conn., as were those of Barbara (Grosset) Douglas, his first wife of 40 years, who predeceased him in 1982.

As a young man, he started working for a promising new company called IBM, which had recently made a splash at the 1939 World’s Fair. He started on the showroom of IBM’s Madison Avenue headquarters, and retired from the company 34 years later as part of the sales force.

During World War II, Stuart served as a private in the U.S. Army stationed with an IBM Machine Records Unit. Following the war, he, his wife, Barbara, and their growing family made their home in Greenwich, but subsequently moved as his career dictated to Cheshire, Conn., and later to Needham and Sherborn, Mass.  Following his retirement, Stuart relocated first to Naples, Fla., and later to Mount Dora, Fla. He first acquired a second home in Nantucket, before settling into his house, “Pineapple Hill,” in Little Compton more than 40 years ago.

Throughout his long life, Stuart never lost his zeal for fun nor his love of the new. In addition to keeping abreast of the latest technology, he never stopped pursuing new ways to do just about anything. Whether it was an innovative approach to swinging a golf club, nutritional fad, or a trendy cooking craze, he was always eager to give it a try.

Always gregarious, Stuart was a member of the River Oaks Country Club, as well as a former member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, Sakonnet Yacht Club, Warren’s Point Beach Club, the Nantucket Yacht Club, and the Madison Beach Club.

In addition to his wife, he leaves behind a daughter, June Diffenbach of Concord, Mass.; two sons, Stuart Douglas Jr. and his wife, Jean, of Barrington, and Andrew Douglas and his wife, Jane, of Little Compton; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Two sons, Robert Douglas and Alexander Douglas, predeceased him.

Burial will be private, with internment at the family plot in Greenwich.
