Dr. Laurent Gousie, 79, of Bristol

gousieDr. Laurent Gousie, 79, of Bristol died Thursday May 9, 2013 at Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Marie A. Gousie (Rauh), to whom he was married to for 49 years, and the father of Michael B. Gousie of Massachusetts.

Dr. Gousie was a longtime resident of Pawtucket and currently lived in Bristol.

He was a professor of German and French and an administrator at Providence College for over 50 years.

Dr. Gousie served in the U.S. Army for over 35 years, serving during the Korean War. After being stationed in Germany for three years, he continued in the Army Reserves for the remainder of his military career, attaining the rank of Colonel.

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where the family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, May 13, 2013. francisDaniel Francis Sr., 85, of Warren, died Saturday May 11, 2013 at Silver Creek Manor.

Born in Bristol, a son of the late John T. Francis III and Maria (Pacheco) Francis, he was a lifelong area resident. Mr. Francis was employed as a heavy equipment operator with Fairlawn Excavating in Warren for many years until his retirement.  He was a member of the New England Tractor and Truck Association and the Local #4 Operation Engineers. Mr. Francis enjoyed his passion for remodeling and restoring tractors, also gardening, and spending time in New Hampshire.  He shared many years with his companion Lorraine Barba.

Surviving are Lorraine Barba of Warren; two sons, Daniel Francis Jr. and his wife Kristen and David “Bucky” Francis both of Warren; three daughters, Mary Lee Cardoza and her husband David, Sheryle Mendoza, widow of James, Paula Dallaire and her husband Steven, all of Warren; two brothers, Joseph and David Francis of Bristol; two sisters Elizabeth Aguiar and Rita Crabtree of Bristol; 10 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John Francis, Margo Craig and Veronica Tavares.

Arrangements are in the care of Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, where the family will receive friends Tuesday, May 14, 2013 from 4 to 8 p.m., with his funeral service beginning at 6 p.m. in the funeral home. DeSouza_001Mary (Medeiros) DeSouza, 96, of Little Compton, died Sunday, May 12, 2013, peacefully at home with her family by her side.  She was the wife of the late Antone DeSouza.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Carreira) Medeiros.  A resident of Little Compton for most of her life, she had worked as a cook at the Fo’c's’le restaurant in Little Compton for 33 years.

Mrs. DeSouza enjoyed reading, spending time with her family and was a member of Full Gospel Christian Fellowship in New Bedford.

She is survived by four sons, Wallace DeSouza of Tiverton, William DeSouza of Oklahoma, Antone DeSouza Jr. of Little Compton, and David R. DeSouza of Little Compton; three daughters, Anne Gonsalves of Maine, Carolyn Hill of Little Compton and Irene DeSouza of Fall River; 15 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.  She was the sister of the late Manuel Medeiros.

Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be Thursday, May 16, at 10 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.  Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton.  Calling hours will be Wednesday, 4-7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Full Gospel Christian Fellowship, 6415 Highway 90 W., New Bedford, MA 02745. Truong T. Mason, 64, Little Compton

Mason 001Truong T. Mason, 64, of Little Compton, died peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, with her loving husband by her side. She succumbed after a courageous two and a half year battle with cancer. Truong, or Rose as she was more commonly known as by her friends and family, is survived by her husband of 44 years, Bruce A. Mason Sr.

Born in Vinh Long, South Vietnam, on September 5, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Truong Van Anh and Nguyen Thi Dinh, who survives her.

Mrs. Mason was the owner of Rose’s Home cleaning service, which she ran for over 30 years.

In addition to her mother and husband she is also survived by a daughter, Thuy T. Mason and her husband Roger of Alameda, Calif., sons Bruce A. Mason Jr. of Brooklyn, NY, and James S. Mason and his wife Suzanne of Apex, NC; three grandchildren, Alexander Truong and Beca Li Truong of Alameda, Calif., and Nolan Mason of Apex, NC, and a large number of caring and loved extended family members.

A memorial service in her honor will be announced and held at a later date.

Irene M. Camara, 90, Tiverton

Irene Camara jpegIrene M. (Medeiros) Camara, 90, of Tiverton, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2013. She was the wife of the late Mathias “Marty” Camara.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Manuel and Adeline (Lima) Medeiros, she resided in Tiverton for over 60 years and was a member of St. Madeleine Sophie Church.

A retired seamstress, she worked for the former K&G Manufacturing Company in Fall River for many years.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and loved playing bingo.

She is survived by three sons, Paul M. Camara (wife Kathleen), James M. Camara (wife Dorothy) and Mathias Camara III (wife Marjory) all of Tiverton; two sisters, Lenora Sousa of Tiverton and Helen Rego of Fall River; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Emma Ferreira, Joseph Medeiros, Leo Medeiros and Albert Medeiros.

lastoriaTony “Moose” Lastoria Sr., 82, of Pataskala, Ohio, passed away on Monday, April 29, 2013 in Pataskala, after a long illness.

Born on June 11, 1930 in Warren to the late Michael and Anna (Sullo) Lastoria, Tony was a kind and loving man who lived a full life.

His son, Tony Jr., and daughter-in-law, Mary of Pataskala; daughtersJeanette Grant and Debra Rose Grammer of Virginia; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, survive him. He also leaves three sisters, Antoinette Nappi of Portsmouth, Carolyn Arruda of Warren and Mary Frederick of Fall River; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 42 years, Bess Elizabeth (Bloemendal) Lastoria, who passed away a month earlier. Also preceding him in death was his first wife, Rhea, stepdaugther Penny, and two sisters, Concetta Cadile and Virgina DeLeo, both of Warren.

Services were held at the Kauber-Sammons Funeral Home in Pataskala on Wednesday, May 1, and at Smith Funeral Home in Warren, RI, on Friday, May 3. Internment was at St. Alexander’s Cemetery in Warren, RI.

machado 1David John Machado, 48, of Greenville, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 5, 2013. He was the husband of Kristen Mayo-Machado.

Born in Taunton, a son of Robert and Ellen (Stawniak) Machado, he was a long-time area resident. Mr. Machado was an automation technician and was employed by Materion in Lincoln for many years.

Besides his wife and parents, he leaves three sons, Nathan and Joshua Machado of Cranston and Eric Mayo of Arkansas; a daughter, Gillian Mayo of Greenville; a brother, James Machado of North Carolina; three sisters, Christine and Tracy Pullen of Warren and Debbie Machado; nephews Garrett and Randy Pullen and Christopher DeCosta; and a niece, Abigail Fontaine.

Arrangements are in the care of Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where the family received friends Friday, May 10. Dominic Voccio, 40, Brunswick, Maine

voccio obitDominic Voccio, 40, of Brunswick, Maine, and formerly of Barrington, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, May 9, 2013.

Born in Providence, RI, Dominic graduated from Barrington High School in 1992. After high school, Dominic lived briefly in Arizona and then moved to Maine.

He was a talented chef who enjoyed fine dining as well as dive diners. An amateur photographer, Dominic made it his goal to visit and photograph all of Maine’s lighthouses. He had an extensive knowledge of music and was an avid enthusiast of classic rock.

He will be remembered by so many for his sharp wit, sense of humor, and ability to make people laugh and feel at ease. Incredibly thoughtful and compassionate, he moved all those who knew him with his gentle and kind spirit.

Dominic leaves his mother, Shirley Voccio of Maine; his father, Frank Voccio of Barrington; his sister, Alaina Voccio of Santa Monica, CA; his niece and nephew, Marissa and Eric Lima, both of Santa Monica; and countless close friends. He was also the proud ”father” of his beloved Boston terrier mix, Zoey.

Mary E. Wetterland, 76, Tiverton

Mary E. (Mullen) Wetterland, 76, beloved wife of Willard A. (Phil) Wetterland and mother of Harold, the late David and Willard, III, entered peacefully into rest on January 31, 2013, in Naples, Florida.

Born October 28, 1937, daughter of Edward P. and M. Isabel (Emmett) Mullen of Somerset, Mary was a graduate of Somerset High School, Class of 1955, Katherine Gibbs and Bristol Community College.

Mary was employed for many years by Sumner James Waring Jr., Salve Regina College and the Newport Naval Base.

Mary and Phil divided their retirement years between Tiverton and Naples. She was active in the Old Stone Baptist Church and later became a member of Amicable Congregational Church, both in Tiverton. She was a Past Worthy Advisor of Rainbow for Girls, a member of Cortez Allen Eastern Star, and active in the boosters club of Tiverton High School. For many years she was a volunteer at Hospice in Fall River and then in Naples where she also volunteered with the English as a Second Language Program. Mary and Phil loved to travel, especially with dear friends Jack and Judy McCann. They spent many happy times together traveling to places all over the world.

In addition to her loving husband and sons, she is survived by two sisters, Nancy J. Roberts of Viera, Florida, and Helen A. Bouchard of Swansea, and a brother, Edward P. Mullen of Somerset; a granddaughter, Abby Wetterland, and several loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Celebration of Life services will be held at Amicable Congregational Church on Main Road in Tiverton on Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m..

Barbara J. Pond, 84, Little Compton

Loved writing, history; active in town groups

Barbara J Pond, 84, of Little Compton,  formerly of Glastonbury, Conn., passed away Friday, May 10, 2013.  She was the daughter of  the late Willard Brownell Jewell and Ann (Hennessey) Jewell. She is survived by her beloved husband Franklin ‘Pat’ Pond and her children Debra Pond of Wethersfield, Conn., and Steven Pond of Little Compton.

Barbara attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn., and later in life attended the University of Massachusetts (Dartmouth), where she studied creative writing. An accomplished writer and poet, she was a reporter for the Hartford Times and Glastonbury (Connecticut) Citizen newspapers and author of the novel Falcons of Ormond, of which she was very proud.

While living in Glastonbury, she was active in local politics and civic affairs and served on the Republican Town Committee and Glastonbury Redevelopment Agency.  In Little Compton she had been a member of the Historical Society, Sogkonate Garden Club, Sakonnet Preservation Association and Village Improvement Society.

Barbara was a great lover of history. She was a dealer in antiques and the fifth generation of her family to live in her Maple Avenue home. A life-long sport fan, she was a devoted follower of the New England Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics.

Besides her husband and children, she is survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law John W. and Nancy Jewell of Houston, Tex., and Richard B. and Lynne Jewell of Los Angeles, Calif., and their families.

Claudette M. Ryan, 77, Middletown

RyanClaudette M Ryan, 77, of Middletown, went joyfully into the arms of Our Lord at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Fall River on November 22, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Edmour Cormier and Marie (Pelletier) Cormier. She was married for 51 years to the late Richard J. Ryan.

Claudette was a loving “stay at home” Mom to four children. As her children grew older, she worked briefly for Richard Long, architect, and Dr. Brian Cornell, podiatrist as an office assistant. She also worked as a fellow barber in Dick Ryan’s Barber Shop.

Claudette attended Mount St. Marys’ Catholic school in Fall River where she learned to play the piano and entertained us well for many years. She was a communicant and Extra Ordinary Minister of Holy Communion at St. Lucy’s Catholic Faith Community. She and her husband enjoyed years of ballroom and square dancing, and bowling. The family took numerous time share vacations in North Conway, NH, and on the Cape. She bids a joyful farewell to her wonderful friends Mary Settle and Ed Meyer, as well as all her friends in the “Knitting Group” and the Senior Center Choir of Middletown.

She is survived by her three daughters and one son, Kathleen Ryan of Middletown,  Linda Ekstrom and her husband Robert and their children, Brittany, Robert, Taylor and Nicholas of Tiverton,  Susan Stepalavich and  her husband Martin of Danielson, Conn.,and their children, Ryan and his wife Alexandra and their baby Mary Elizabeth of Plainfield, Conn., and Marty and Jack Stepalavich of Danielson,  Conn., and Kevin Ryan and his wife Cynthia and their children, Katheryne, Elizabeth and Noah of Westerly. She is also survived by her brother, Roger Cormier of Fall River.

She was the sister of the late Rita Cantin and the late Claire Ruest.

Calling hours will be  Friday, May 17 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI. Her funeral will be Saturday, May 18, at 8 .m., from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 9 in St. Lucy’s Church, 909 East Main Road, Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery; 465 Brown’s Lane Middletown, RI 02842.

1-img057-207x300Carlos L. Eastwood II, 53, of Paine Avenue, Bristol, died Monday, April 29, 2013 at Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket. He was the husband of Alicia A. (Turner) Eastwood.

Born in Onaga, Kansas, he was a son of the late Carlos L  and Nora L. (Gamino) Eastwood. Mr. Eastwood was a Navy veteran of the Gulf War.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Emily Eastwood; a son, Carlos L. Eastwood III; and two brothers, David and John Eastwood. He was the father of the late Aaron A. Eastwood.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 3, from the Perry/McStay Funeral Home in East Providence. Burial with military honors followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol.

Mary E. Soares, 92, Portsmouth

Soares, MaryMary E. (Beirola) Soares, 92, of Portsmouth, died on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at home.

Born in Fall River on November 30, 1920, to the late Antone and Maria (Miguel) Beirola, she was the wife of the late Manuel J. Soares.

Mary worked for many years for the State of Rhode Island Hot Lunch Program. She also worked tirelessly with her family on the Soares Produce Farm in Portsmouth. She loved bingo, but loved spending time with her family even more. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son, Manuel J Soares Jr. of Portsmouth; her three daughters, Marylou Sylvia of Tiverton, Elaine Aguiar-Poirier of Somerset, and Joyce Rolfe of Portsmouth; her grandchildren, Shawn Rolfe, Erica Soares, Michelle Farina, Stephanie Morris, Ashley Aguiar, and Jennifer Merchant; and her great grandchildren, Vince Farina, Victoria Bouchard, Juliana Merchant, Kayson Soares, Alyssa Arruda and Dennis Arruda.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Joseph Beirola, Henry Beirola, Antone Beirola, Manuel Beirola, Sarah DeCouto, Charlotte Mello, Isabel Costa, and Dorothy Farias-Ferreira.

Visiting hours were Sunday, May 19,  from 5-8 p.m. in the Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth.

Her funeral was Monday, May 20, at 9 a.m. from the Connors Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Anthony’s Church, Portsmouth.  Burial wae in Portsmouth Cemetery.

Joseph A. Charette, 72, Land O’ Lakes, Fla.

ImageJoseph Anthony “Nonni” Charette, 72, of Land O’ Lakes, Fla., passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013. He was born in Warren, RI and moved to Florida in 1976.

Joe was a retired United States Air Force Vietnam veteran.  He was also retired from the United States Postal Service and enjoyed working as a starter at Rocky Point Golf Course.  Joe was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, 4th degree.

He leaves his wife of 46 years, JoAnn; two daughters, Toni Marie Charette (David RuLon) of Land O’ Lakes and his “tallest daughter,” Laurie Hiatt of Denver, CO; two grandchildren, Hannah Marie and Skylar Marie; a brother, Oscar Charette; his sister-in-law, Gloria Charette; a niece, Tiffany Jestes (Bryan); his great-nephew, Cody James; and many extended family members.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am Friday, May 31 at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Land O’ Lakes. A military honors ceremony will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Fla.

Patricia L. McLane, 72, Somerset

McLane, PatriciaPatricia L. (Souza) McLane, 72, of Somerset passed away on Saturday May 18, 2013, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of 47 years to Myron E. McLane.

Patricia was born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Cabral) Souza. She was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1959.

Patricia then went to graduate from the Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1965. Mrs. McLane worked in the operating room at Truesdale Hospital for a few years. Patricia then worked as the bookkeeper for the family farrier business in Somerset for many years.

Mrs. McLane traveled extensively with her husband. They wintered in Lauderdale by the Sea in Florida and summered at East Beach in Westport for many years. She cherished the time she spent with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors besides her husband are a daughter, Amy E. McLane Fitzgerald of Somerset, Mass.,, and two grandchildren, Sarah and Julia.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Hathaway Community Home for Funerals, 900 Buffinton St., Somerset, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 in Saint Patrick Church, 306 South Street, Somerset. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Fall River.

Michael P. Perry, 57, Tiverton

Michael P Perry, 57, of Tiverton, died at St. Anne’s Hospital on Monday, May 20, 2013. Born in 1955, he was the son of Charles Perry and the late Lorraine Perry, and brother of Colleen Perry Ramos, all of Tiverton. He is survived by his father, Charlie, his sister Colleen and her husband Rick Ramos, niece Shannon Ramos and nephew Matthew Ramos, all of Tiverton, and girlfriend Kim Schmidt of Putnam Conn. He was the beloved grandson of the late Charles and Anna Perry.

Mike was a graduate of Tiverton High School, and attended the University of Rhode Island where he studied journalism. He worked for many years as a customer service representative for various local businesses.

Mike was an avid and accomplished guitarist. He spent many happy hours at the Seekonk Raceway, New Hampshire Motor Speedway, TF Green Airport, and Logan Airport, doing what he loved — watching fast cars and airplanes. He loved NASCAR and was a master model builder. Also an aviation enthusiast, Mike collected die-cast airplane models and was a regular attendee of the Quonset Air Show.

Confined to a wheelchair since childhood, Mike never thought of himself as disabled. He played street hockey and baseball when he was kid, drove all over New England to attend car races and air shows from the time he received his license, and played guitar in various bands and duos at pubs and restaurants on the South Coast.

Mike was an animal lover and always had a beloved dog or cat at his side.

Mike was a great story-teller and entertained his friends and family for hours on end with tales of his road trips, family outings, concerts, and parties in the Lavoie’s backyard. Virtually every story began with the words, “Did I tell you about the day me, Alvin, and Fairhurst…” or “So one day, me and Healey…” and ended in laughter.

Other survivors include life-long friends Alvin Lavoie, Ray Lavoie, Michael Fairhurst, Paul Levesque, Steve Healey, and Judy and Priscilla Harrison Bates of Tiverton.

At Michael’s request, there will not be a wake or a funeral service. For those wishing to honor Mike’s life, contributions in his memory should be made to Forever Paws Animal Shelter in Fall River.

Esther is survived by her children, Charles Francis of Warren, Pamela Andreozzi and husband, Steven of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Roxanne Anania and husband, Angelo of Warwick, Raymond Moreira, III and wife, Daniela of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerias Brazil, Steven Moreira and wife, Jennifer of Wilson, North Carolina, Michelle Keech and husband, Michael of Wilson, North Carolina and Ronald Moreira and wife, Jennifer of Wilson, North Carolina; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and her sister, Shirley Dubois of Fall River, Massachusetts.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Moreira, Jr., and her siblings, Wayne R. Mathias, Arthur Fallone, Betty Fallone and Cheryl Fallone.

Funeral services are from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Friday, May 24, 2013 at 8 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood Street, Bristol.  Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol. obit-Patton, MatthewSergeant Matthew Scott Patton, 23, of Acacia Road, passed away on May 13, 2013 at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Born in Providence, he was the son of John and Lynn (Steger) Patton.  He was the brother of Evan Patton, Joshua Patton and Caley Patton; grandson of Billy L. Patton and the late June (Orr) Patton and Paul and Bette Steger; nephew of Michael Patton, Karin Patton, Kevin Patton-Hock, Bruce Steger, Donna Jelley, Stacey Steger and Jody Johnson.

Matthew was a 2008 graduate of Mt. Hope High School and enlisted in the US Army in August of 2008.

His funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 25th from 4 to 6 p.m. at the George C. Lima Funeral Home 367 High Street.  Military Honors will be rendered at 6 p.m.

Joshua Danis passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a long illness.  A lifelong resident of Westport, Joshua worked for Amtrak as a machine operator for 20 years.
He leaves behind his sons, Brandon and Jame Danis II; his parents, James and Denise; his sister, Wendy and her husband Jim Rayne; and nephews, Connor and Griffin Rayne.  He also leaves the mother of his sons, Jennifer Danis of Fall River; his grandfather, Donald Danis of Vermont, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

Richard L. Koehler, 79, of Crescent Park Manor, Crescent View Avenue, Riverside, died peacefully on May 23, 2013.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Clifford L. and Dorothea M. (O’Brien) Koehler, he lived in Riverside for 55 years. Mr. Koehler was a petroleum pipe fitter for 20 years.  He was a United States Maine Corps Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Koehler was a member of the Narragansett Terrace Yacht Club.  He loved being on the water where he enjoyed sailing.

He is survived by three sons; Richard L. Koehler of Clarkdale, Ariz., David J. Koehler of Cranston and Mark E. Koehler of Barrington, a daughter; Cheryl A. Koehler of East Providence, a sister; Rita Tillinghast of Florida, a brother; Paul Koehler of Florida, nine grandchildren and twin great granddaughters.
