Mary L. (Pereira) Cabral

Mary Lourdes (Pereira) Cabral, 97, of Bristol died on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Manor.
Born in Coimbra, Portugal, she was a daughter of the late Dr. Manuel C. and Gilda Pereira and the wife of the late Domingos C. Cabral. She came to this country from Sao Miguel, Azores, with her parents in 1929 at the age of 11.
She was a graduate of the Thibodeau Business School. A longtime resident of Somerset, Mass., she was a retired interpreter and special needs office worker for the Town of Somerset. Previously, she was a bookkeeper at Cherry & Webb Department Store.
A parishioner of St. John of God Church, Mrs. Cabral was a member of The Morning Glorys and taught CCD classes at the church. She also was a member of the Portuguese American Civic League.
Mary loved her family and was a lively joke and storyteller. She was “ti tia” and like a second mother to many of her nieces and nephews.
She leaves two sisters, Madalene D’Oliveira and Lucille Reis, and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a sister of the late Fernanda (Mrs. Alfred) Rego, Fernando C. Pereira and Mary Jo Coffey.
Her funeral is at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, High Street, Bristol, with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Street, Bristol. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.

Evelyn Aloise, 93, formerly of Tiverton

Evelyn  Aloise, 93, of Franklin, NH, wife of Paul S. Aloise (predec. 2004), and a resident at Merrimack County Nursing Home in Boscawen, died on November 21, 2015.

Evelyn was born on February 11, 1922 in Haverhill, Mass., to the late Arthur and Irene Pickard (Ames). She grew up in Deerfield with her sister Ruth and two brothers, Bob and Rich. She also attended school there.

Evelyn moved to Pittsfield, NH in 1940. She was employed at Pittsfield Shoe for over 20 years. She was the president of the VFW Post #4029 in Pittsfield for two years.

Evelyn and Paul moved to Tiverton in 1980 and was a member of the Amicable Congregational Church in Tiverton for 25 years. She was active with the senior citizens in Little Compton, working as a companion and offering transportation for people in need of home care. Evelyn moved to Franklin N.H. With her daughter Linda and son-in-law, Rolfe in 2004.

Evelyn had four daughters, Sandra Smith (predec. 2010) who was married to Wilson Smith of Loudon, NH, Beverly Carr (predec. 2005) who was married to Russell Carr of Pittsfield, NH,

Sharon O’Dougherty who is married to Kerry O’Dougherty of Penacook, NH, and Linda Swain who is married to Rolfe Swain of Cheyenne, Wyoming. Evelyn, or “GG”, which stands for “great grandmother” also had nine grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in spring of 2016 and interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Tiverton. The Cremation Society of NH is assisting the family with arrangements. For more information please go to www.csnh.com

Roberta B. Corkhum, Barrington

Roberta B. Corkhum, of Apple Tree Lane, Barrington, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the beloved wife of William R. Corkhum for 64 years.

She was born in Newark, Del., a daughter of the late Claude and Marion Benner. She graduated from Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Del. and Syracuse University with a BA in political science and economics.

She was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, was a member of the Barrington Garden Club and a former member of the Barrington Yacht Club.

Besides her husband she leaves a son, Geoffrey B. Corkhum of Charlotte, N.C., a daughter Carol Edwards of Westerly and two grandchildren. She was also the mother of the late Russell B. Corkhum and sister of the late Richard and Claude Benner.

The funeral service was held on Saturday at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road Barrington. Burial will be in Forest Chapel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial Contributions to St. John’s Church would be appreciated. Visit smithmason.com for information.

Samuel J. ‘Bud’ Kerns, Jr., 92, Barrington

Samuel J. “Bud” Kerns, Jr., 92, of Atria Bay Spring, Bay Spring Avenue, died peacefully on Friday, Nov. 27, 2015. He was the husband of the late Marie E. (McDonnell) Kerns.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Samuel J. Kerns Sr. and Margaret (McCormick) Kerns, he lived in Barrington for 28 years. He was a graduate of Merrimack College Class of 1954.

Mr. Kerns was a district manager for the Sprague Oil Co. for 15 years before retiring in 1988. He previously was a salesman for the Shell Oil Co.

Samuel was a communicant of St. Luke Church and a member of the parish’s Young at Heart Club, Choir and Parish Council. He also was a C.C.D. teacher and volunteer for the Catholic Charity drives.

Mr. Kerns was a member of the Barrington Republican Town Committee and the Narragansett Bay Chorus. He was a volunteer at Amos House, Providence. He enjoyed golfing and playing hockey as a youth.

Samuel was a United States Navy Veteran serving during World War II.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen M. Kerns and husband Joseph Sullivan of West Virginia and Margaret A. Mailloux and her husband Charles of Riverside; two sons, Robert S. Kerns and his wife Maura Keenan of Belmont, Mass., and Timothy J. Kerns and his wife Margaret of Laconia, NH; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was the grandfather of the late Samuel J. Kerns III.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, Dec. 3, in the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside from 5 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 4, in St. Luke Church, Washington Road, Barrington at 10 a.m. Burial will be held in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

Joseph M. Gosselin, 95, Somerset

Joseph M. Gosselin, 95, passed away at home on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, surrounded by family.

Born on Aug. 13, 1920 in Fall River, he was the son of the late Aime and Denyse (Couture) Gosselin and husband of 70 years to Helen (Dunaj) Gosselin. A 1938 graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Joe was a bombardier in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, serving with the 95th Bomber Group. When his B-17 was shot down over Germany, Joe was held as a POW in Stalag Luft III, camp of the famed “Great Escape,” earning a Purple Heart for his valor, and rose to the rank of major in the Air Force Reserves.

Following the war, Joe began a career in water management with the Bristol Country Water Department in Warren, R.I., moving to Somerset in 1968 to become superintendent for the Town of Somerset Water Department and serving as a commissioner on its board upon retirement.

Curious, energetic and active, he played golf and bowled regularly well into his nineties and relished spending time with his grandchildren and the latest technology. Joe was a communicant of Saint Louis de France Church in Swansea.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Catherine Sengel of Warwick, R.I.; son, Stanley Gosselin and wife, Clare, of Rehoboth; five grandchildren, Thaddeus and Seth Asa Sengel and Max, Samuel and Sadie Gosselin; two sisters, Yvonne Gosselin and Juliette Bizier of Fall River, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Katharyn Sengel; sisters, Mary Jane Gosselin and Lucille Fredericks; and brothers, Louis Philippe, Albert, Rosaire and Leo Gosselin.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint Louis de France Church, 56 Buffington St., Swansea, on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Saint Patrick Cemetery, Somerset.

Pearl Jean (Larivee) Martel, 68, Warren

Pearl Jean (Larivee) Martel, 68, of Warren, died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015 at Orchard View Manor. She was the beloved wife of the late Wilfred J. Martel.

Born in Fall River, Ma., a daughter of the late William Joseph Larivee and Angelina Ethel (Amaral) Larivee, she was very creative with arts and crafts. Mrs. Martel loved gardening and animals, and also enjoyed being an equestrian.

She was the mother of Willliam W. Martel and his wife Margaret of Warren.She was the sister of Paula McCagney and the late Christine (Larivee) Andrade. She leaves her nephews, Josh Cappuccilli and Jonathan Turcotte and her neices Salina and Krista McCagney.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in St. Jean Baptist Church in Warren, R.I.

Helen E. Perrault, 97, of Tiverton, passed away on Monday, Nov. 30, 2015, at Grand Islander Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Norman Perrault who passed in June, 2002.

Helen leaves her family to cherish her memory including her son, Norman Perrault and wife Lynn; a daughter, Eileen Murphy and husband Barry; and four devoted grandsons, James, Joshua, Benjamin and Zachary. Four great grandchildren, Natalie, Olivia, Alexandra and Oliver, will all miss her. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family,

Helen’s funeral will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 9 a.m. in the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway, Fall River,  followed by a service at 10 a.,m. Donald F. Montle, 82, Little Compton

Donald F. Montle, 82, of Little Compton and Marco Island, Florida, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.  He was the husband of Joan P. (Parfitt) Montle to whom he has been married for the past 57 years.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Barney J. and Rita E. (Larrabee) Levesque, and was a graduate of B.M.C. Durfee High School, class of 1950. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Don went on to receive his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Springfield College in 1958 and later earned his Master’s Degree in education and CAGS from Boston University.  A veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean War in Karlsruke, Germany, as base athletic director.

Mr. Montle was hired in 1960 by the Fall River Public School Department as physical education teacher, a position he held for 10 years.  In 1970 he was appointed the director of health and physical education and served in that capacity until his retirement 1994. For many of his 34 years, Don also served as the head football and baseball coach at Durfee High School. He began his teaching career at Terryville High School in Terryville, Conn., in 1957 as a physical education instructor and moved on to Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ, where he was also the assistant football and baseball coach.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael P. Montle and his wife Lara of S. Kingstown, and Timothy P. Montle and his wife Cathy of Little Compton,  two daughters, Donna M. Putira and her husband Gregory of Indialantic, Fla., and Karen M. Marion and her husband Buzzy of Little Compton, cousins, John H. Springer and his wife Kathleen of Little Compton, and Ann Marie Medeiros of Somerset; and six grandchildren, Nathan, Robin, Bridget, Maggie, Ryan, and Jacob.

His funeral Mass will be held on Friday, Dec. 18, at 10 a.m. in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 74 Simmons Road, Little Compton.  Visiting hours will be Thursday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home of Memorial Tribute at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River.  Contributions in his honor may be made to the Boys and Girls Club, 803 Bedford St, Fall River, MA 02723.  To send a tribute or for directions please visit: www.waring-sullivan.com

Joseph Lial, 90, Warwick

Joseph Lial, 90, of Warwick, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015. He was the husband of the late Erma (Pacheco) Lial and a son of the late Victor and Candida (Brazil) Lial.
A former Warren resident, Mr. Lial was a World War II Navy veteran and was employed as a manager for Davol Rubber for 45 years. He retired in 1986.
He was the father of Shirley Lial, Joanne Smith and the late Wayne Lial; the companion of Natalie Furtado; and is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was brother of the late Antoine, Victor, Frank, Barbara and Annie Lial, and Lena Machado.
His funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 7, from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Rita Church, Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick. Burial will be private. Visiting hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6.

Isabelle MacDonald, 93, Westport

Isabelle  (Hodkinson) MacDonald, 93,  of Westport, died Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at Charlton Memorial Hospital.  She was the wife of John F. MacDonald Jr. of Westport, to whom she was married for 66 years.

Born in Fall River, daughter of the late Harold and Delia (Warrener) Hodkinson, she grew up in Fall River and has been a resident of Westport since her marriage in 1949.

She was a Durfee High School graduate and worked as a commercial seamstress at the former Samesta Manufacturing, Fall River until her retirement. Mrs. MacDonald was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church, Westport.  She was very active in Westport town politics, serving on the Board of Health and the Tax Assessors Office.  She gave of her time to several charitable organizations and was recognized for her many years of service for the Fall River Bishop’s Ball.

She enjoyed traveling the world with her husband,  her sister Mary  and sister in law Gerri,  taking her grandsons on cruises while spending her winters in Florida, and sewing her handmade quilts for the entire family.

Including her husband, survivors include her sons, John F MacDonald III and his wife Constance, and Michael J. MacDonald and his wife Jacqueline, both of Westport; her brother, George Hodkinson of Marston Mills; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Marion McGreavy, Eleanor Bottomly, Mary Janick and Charles, Harold and James Hodkinson.

Maria Celeste ( Pinheiro) Avila, 84, of Warren, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2015, at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Warren. She was the wife of Francisco Avila.

Celeste was born in Feteira Horta, the Azores, Portugal, a daughter of the late Francisco and Maria Zulmira (Faria) Pinheiro. She was a homemaker and had been a Warren resident since 1974, coming from Portugal. She was a parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

Besides her husband, she leaves her children, Manuel Silveira and his wife Noemia of North Providence, Joseph Avila and his wife Mary of Bristol, Francisco Avila of Arkansas, KS., Herman Avila and his wife Denise of North Stonington, Ct. , Jorge Avila of Warren, Margarida Myers of Leavenworth, KS., Luis Avila of Warren, and Ruth Raposa and her husband John of Bristol. She was the grandmother of Alexandra and Andrea Silveira, Alyssa Oliveira, Christopher and Jessica Avila, Amanda Emerick, Adam and Andrew Avila, Bethany and Zachary Howard, Brianna and Kylie Avila, and Baylee and Ian Bryden. Celeste was the great-grandmother of Annastasia Avila and sister of the late Jose Pinheiro, the late Carlos Pinheiro and the late Manuel Pinheiro

Her funeral will be held at 7 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, from Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 500 Metacom Ave., Warren. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery, Warren.

Merilyn P. Wilber, 51, Little Compton

Merilyn P. Wilber, 51, of Little Compton, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was the wife of Peter C. Medeiros (25 years), the daughter of Paul and Frances Wilber, and the mother of Alexandra S. Medeiros (19) and Emily W. Medeiros (16), all of Little Compton.

Merilyn was born June 11, 1964, in Natick, Mass. She grew up and attended the Barrington, RI schools during which she was an AFS one-year foreign exchange student to Bolivia. Merilyn enthusiastically swam for the Barrington swim teams and she worked as a lifeguard for a variety of RI beaches including S. Shore and Briggs Beach, Little Compton.

She earned her undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, Ohio and spent one college year studying in Segovia, Spain. Merilyn earned her master’s degree from the University of RI.  She taught Spanish for 25 years at St. George’s School, Middletown,  and more recently taught Spanish at Salve Regina University, Newport.  She was highly regarded by students and faculty and remained in touch with numerous students over the years. She traveled to Spain frequently to further her Spanish language and cultural expertise. Additionally, Merilyn taught English one year in Soria, Spain, while her daughters were immersed in the Spanish schools and culture.

Merilyn enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, cooking, spending time at the beach, watching Patriots football games, and watching her girls’ sports games. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially during holidays and summer cookouts.  Her warm smile, infectious laugh, and big heart were her trademarks and she will be sadly missed by all.

Additional survivors include her three sisters, Marjorie G. Lint (husband, John), Col. (R) Jennifer Teile Wilber (son, Brian), and Deborah L. Wilber; two uncles, Horace B. Wildes and Glenn K. Wildes; one aunt, Mildred Livecchi, and many cousins and friends here and in Spain.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, Dec. 17, from 7 – 9:30 p.m, at the Little Compton Community Center, 34 Commons, Little Compton.

Her funeral service will take place on Saturday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m., in The United Congregational Church, Little Compton.

Manuel R.A. Neronha , 83, Little Compton

Manuel R.A. Neronha , 83, of Long Highway, Little Compton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at Country Gardens Nursing Home, Swansea. He was the husband of the late Emilia ( Ferreira) Neronha. A life-long resident of Little Compton, he was the son of the late Manuel and Viola ( Alemida) Neronha.

Mr. Neronha was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War.  He was a self-employed fisherman for 50 years.

He leaves one son, Timothy A. Neronha (Laurie) of North Providence; one daughter, Kim L. Sousa (Rich) of Middletown; three brothers, Ben, Joe, and John Neronha, all of Tiverton; two sisters, Dorothy Roque, and Veronica Neronha, both of Fall River; and one grandson, Logan Neronha.

His funeral will be held Wednesday, Dec. 16, at 8:45 a.m. from the Fern Acres Funeral Home, 72 Willow Ave., Little Compton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Catherine of Siena Church on the Commons. Visiting hours are Tuesday, 5 to 8 p.m. Burial with Military Honors will be in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Little Compton.

Andrew G. Gibree, 64, Bristol

Andrew G. Gibree, 64, of Bristol, passed on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Providence, he was a son of George Gibree and Josephine (Murgo) Gibree.

Mr. Gibree worked at St. Gobain Plastics for 31 years. Following his retirement he volunteered his time at the Bristol Animal Shelter. Andrew treasured both his 1957 and 1981 Corvettes. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and Giants. But his most valued and greatest joy were his grandchildren.

He leaves his wife, Dyanne (Harnois) Gibree; a son, Eric A. Gibree and his wife Susan of Johnston; and his daughters, Sara Hisey of Bristol and Kelsey Gibree of Riverside. He is also remembered by his sisters Caroline Tremblay of Warren and Lucille Palmieri of Bristol. Andrew also leaves six grandchildren.

Arrangements are with Smith Funeral & Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren, where family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19. Funeral services will begin at 11 am. Burial will follow in the North Burial Ground, Bristol.

Jeffrey Paul Cheetham, 74, of Church Street, passed away on Sunday, December 13, 2015.
He was the husband of Margaret (Joseph) Cheetham.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late William and Katherine (Maciel) Cheetham.  He was the father of Jeffrey Cheetham Jr., Donna Cheetham, Deborah Gagnon and William Cheetham; grandfather of Shannon Rodrigues, Lisa Cheetham, Jeffrey Gagnon, Samantha Gagnon, Jared Pellitier, Ryver Campbell and Ciara Cheetham; great grandfather of Sophia Gagnon, Audrianna Pellitier, Tyler Rodrigues, Mylee Rodrigues, Bayden Rodrigues, Jayme Cheetham, Jayden Croteau, and Leland Croteau; and brother of Betty Quicksall.
Mr. Cheetham was a graduate of Warren High School and was employed as an iron worker in the construction industry.
His funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 18, at 8 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St.
Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Bristol.

Amelia de Jesus (Torres) Melo, 83, of Silver Creek Manor passed away on Wednesday, December 16, 2015.
She was the wife of the late Eugenio Silva Melo.
Born in Ribeirinha, Ribeira Grande, Sao Miguel, she was the daughter of the late Manuel de Sousa and Irene de Jesus Torres.  She was the mother of Joao Luis Melo, Irene Melo Alves, Maria Eugenia Lopes and the late Jose Manuel Melo.  She was the sister of Manuel Torres Sousa, Leonel Torres Sousa, Cecilia Cabral, Joao Torres Sousa, Irene Borges, Jose Torres Sousa, Virginia Cavaco, Bibiana Pascoal and the late Luis Torres Sousa, Antonio Torres Sousa and Maria de Lurdes Botelho.
Mrs. Melo attended school in Portugal and was a machine operator for Crown Linen Supply before retiring.
Her funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m. from the George Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will follow in North Burial Ground, Bristol. Calling hours are Sunday 4 – 7 PM. limafh.com

Dorothy Dennis, 95, Little Compton

Dorothy (Field) Dennis, 95, of Little Compton, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at Brookdale Sakonnet Bay, Tiverton.  She was the wife of the late William “Bunny” Dennis.

Born in Dartmouth, daughter of the late Joseph and Louella (Wilbur) Field, she had lived in Little Compton for most of her life.  Prior to retirement, she worked for Naval Underwater Systems Center in Newport, and also for Little Compton Nursing Association as a part-time health aide.

She was a member of the Little Compton United Congregational Church where she was also active in their thrift shop.  Mrs. Dennis was a member of the Little Compton Community Club, Womens’ Club of Newport County and was active in the American Legion Post of Little Compton.  She enjoyed playing bridge, but most of all she loved her family and friends.

Survivors include a son, William B. Dennis, III of Texas; two daughters, Carol A. Dennis of Westport and Linda Theriault and her husband Fred of Portsmouth; five granddaughters; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Donald, Raymond and Albert Field.

Private arrangements will be held under the direction of the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Rd., Westport.

Mrs. Diana T. (Sekulski) Grabowski, age 82, of 4 Church Cove Road, Bristol, died Thursday, December 17, 2015 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence, surrounded by her loving family.
She was the wife of the late Alfred E. Grabowski, her husband of 47 years who preceded her in death in 2002.  Born in Warsaw, Poland and raised in Staten Island, NY,  she was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Brudzinski) Sekulski.  A resident of Bristol for 20 years, she previously resided for many years in Brentwood, New York.  Diana was an Elementary School Teacher for 33 years in the Brentwood, NY Public School System, retiring in 1989. A communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Bristol, Diana enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading and bus trips to Foxwoods.  She is survived by two children, Paul A. Grabowski (Beth) of Arlington Heights, IL, Kathleen A. Ferreira (Gabe) of Bristol, three grandsons, Alex Grabowski of Chicago, IL and Christopher and Matthew Ferreira, both of Bristol and a brother, Theodore Sekulski of Staten Island, New York.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Walters. Relatives and friends were  invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on December 21 in St. Mary’s Church. Burial followed in the RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI. Eugene Whitmore, 77, Warren

Eugene Whitmore, 77, died Friday, Dec. 18, 2015 at Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. He was the husband of Janice (Caton) Whitmore.
Mr. Whitmore was born in Binghamton, N.Y., a son of the late Frank and Virginia (Zello) Whitmore.
A carpenter, he was also a school bus driver for the First Student Bus Service for many years. Mr. Whitmore was a veteran of the United States Air Force, serving as an Airman, Second Class. He was a Warren resident all of his life and was a member of St. Matthew’s Church in Barrington.
Mr. Whitmore enjoyed bowling at Dudek Lanes in Warren.
Besides his wife, he leaves his brothers, Donald Belair of California and Ronald Belair of Vermont; his sister, Rosemarie “sis” Andreozzi of Union City, Tenn.; and his nephews, David Wharton of Union City, Tenn., Robert Eugene Wharton of New Bern, Tenn., and Henry Mark Wharton of Warwick. He was a brother of the late Edward Whitmore.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22 at Smith Funeral and Memorial Services, 8 Schoolhouse Road, Warren. Burial with Military honors will follow in the South Burial Ground, Warren.

Courtland M. Palmer Jr., 81, Westport

Courtland M. “Bro” Palmer Jr., 81, of Westport, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015 at the Royal Taber Street Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness. He was the son of the late Courtland M. Palmer, Sr. and Hannah G. (Brownell) Palmer.
Mr. Palmer was born in New Bedford and raised in Westport. Prior to Hurricane Carol, he enjoyed many summers at his family’s beach cottage in Westport.
He was a 1952 graduate of Westport High School and a 1956 graduate of UMASS Amherst. He served his country in the United States Army from 1956-58. Mr. Palmer’s career was in banking and he later retired as assistant vice president.
He attended Pacific Union Congregational Church, Westport, was a member of the Westport Historical Society, and loved his Red Sox.
Survivors include his two brothers, Laurence Palmer and Lincoln F. Palmer, both of Westport; his two sisters, Joyce Doyle of Georgia and Carol Sylvia of New Bedford; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Graveside service, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be Monday, Dec. 28, at Maple Grove Cemetery, Westport at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
