Mr. John A. Carre, age 87 of 17 Jennifer Drive, Bristol and formerly of Upland Way, Barrington, died peacefully Saturday, March 2, 2013 at St. Elizabeth’s Manor, Bristol, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was the husband of Anna M. (Ruggiero) Carre, his wife of 62 years.
Born and raised in Needham, Mass., he was the son of the late Walter G. and Mary C. (Ferguson) Carre. John graduated from Needham High School and started college at Dartmouth University in N.H., leaving college to serve in the US Navy as a pilot during WWII. Following the war he returned to college at New York University receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management in 1949 he started his career at the US Rubber Company in Bristol which became Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation working at the Bristol Plant for 20 years, then he transferred to their plant in New Jersey for a couple of years and then on to their plant in Bridgeview, Ill. where he retired after 40 years with Kaiser in 1988 as their general plant manager. Follow his retirement he moved back to Rhode Island and settled in Barrington where the Carre’s lived for 23 years until their return to Bristol last year.
To keep active during retirement John taught part time at both Bryant University and Community College of RI, management and logistics classes and then was a school bus monitor for the Barrington school system where John spent that time encouraging and mentoring the students to gain a love for reading and the importance of studying and working hard to attain goals in their lives.
John was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, where he chaired the 10-10 club and was a 16th of July Feast volunteer, both for many years, and a former communicant of Holy Angels Church in Barrington. He was a past president of the board of directors for the former Bristol Y.M.C.A. and chaired the pool building committee and during his retirement was a regular at the Barrington Y.M.C.A. swimming three times a week for several years. He was a member of the Leonardo DaVinci Lodge, Sons of Italy in Bristol.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sisters, Louise Proctor of Syracuse, Mass. and Jean Baxter of Londonderry, N.H. and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who adored John. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jeffrey and Peter Carre and a sister, Mary Alice Aiken.
Funeral services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood Street, Bristol, Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State Street, Bristol. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street, Bristol.
